A collection of musings, rants, observations, and updates from Rena. Let's go SC! Posted 12-31-2008 at 02:12 PM by Rena As a big USC fan, I'm obviously going to the Rose Bowl tomorrow. It's a pretty good matchup, with USC against Penn State. Both of them are one-loss teams, and it's a really messed up situation that of 8 one-loss teams, the BCS decides to randomly pick two (Florida and Oklahoma), under the premise of picking the two best conference champions. The Bowl season may be proving them otherwise. The Big East is 4-0 and the PAC-10 is 3-0 in bowls, with all of the PAC-10 wins (with the exception of Cal over Miami) coming over teams ranked higher than them. It's really a joke. The reason the USC has been kept down all year is because of the alleged weakness of the PAC-10, which is buoyed by nothing but east-coast biased pollsters. Vegas even has USC as the number 1 team in the country, and I would much rather trust people that have millions of dollars riding on the outcome than some hack journalist from Tampa with a AP or Harris vote. Personally, if USC played Florida, I have no doubt that our defense would hold them. Out of all the top 8 teams, Florida was the only team to lose at home against Ole Miss. They want to brag about the toughness of the SEC. This is how tough the SEC is... Tennessee scored 13 points against Northern Illinois (who?) Kentucky only scored 20 points against Middle Tennessee State (who?) Vanderbilt lost to Duke... South Carolina got rocked by Clemson Arkansas was terrible this year, losing to the aforementioned powerhouses in Kentucky and Mississippi State. Oh, and they needed a last minute comeback against Louisiana-Monroe (who?) And I'm sure a lot of teams could run the table if their OOC schedule included The Citadel, a Div-1AA team. We're seeing a lot of bias at work here. This is the third straight year that we have an SEC team in the championship game. The first two, they got lucky and played an awfully overrated (or overrated awful) Ohio State team that they whooped. Big deal, a lot of teams could have whooped them. USC whooped Michigan in 2006 when Michigan gave OSU all they could handle. Last year, a TWO LOSS LSU team jumped 3 teams in the final poll just so they could get into the championship game. Ridiculous. If the SEC becomes a de facto semifinal, we'll see a lot more problems with the system. Seriously. In the meantime, go SC!
