Welcome

This is where downtown and midtown Manhattan once stood. It used to be a mecca for the world's finance and business sector. But now, the once proud buildings lie in ruin, either collapsed or collapsing, the untended streets and sidewalks overgrown with weeds. Debris litters the earth, dust and fog fill the air, and parts of the former city are flooded. It is not a pretty sight, but at least it provides some cover...

What used to be an impressive urban park, Central Park is now an overgrown mess. Gone almost two decades without proper care, the Park has long since changed from its former status as a tourist attraction. Nowadays, the park houses untold numbers of loosely spaced straggler groups, as people huddle near the park for safety and stability.

Uptown comprises both the former Upper West Side and the Upper East Side all the way up to Harlem. While this area used to be a center of cultural and consumerist activity, those days are long in the past. Abandoned storefronts and razed highrise buildings dot the landscape. What used to be some of the most glamorous real estate in the world now lies in ruins, a haunting memento towards what once was.

The northernmost borough of New York City, the Bronx is the only one attached to the mainland. This offers stragglers both the option of escaping into the mainland, but it also leaves them vulnerable to Walker migrations from the north. The former Yankee Stadium (both the new and old) did not escape the bombing. On top of the rubble, however, sits the new home of the Crimson Saber, one of two Hegemons in the region. The Bronx's many former gardens also provide excellent flatland for straggler shelters and encampments.

The Cathedral

What was once one of the largest, most diverse areas in the world was hit particularly hard by the bombings. The great buildings and lofts and warehouses that were once part of the DUMBO district crumbled beneath the might of the thunderous missiles. In the aftermath of the bombings, those that survived moved into the area, flocking towards Brooklyn for the ruined shelters. But, all the people in Brooklyn obey one law, and that is of the Golden Banner Hegemon.

Noten Park

What was the [geographically] largest and most diverse of the New York boroughs, Queens escaped total annihilation during the bombings. Unfortunately, so did many of the Walkers. Queens is an infested cesspool, distal to both the fortress humans in Jersey and the majority of the stragglers in Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, and Uptown. However, with the resurgence of vegetation and wildlife on Long Island, many adventurous stragglers will wander through here in search of a meal. But those that frequent Queens know to tread at your own risk...

The isolated island, accessible only by ferry, provided a natural barrier to quarantine the Walkers. Parts of Staten Island looks completely untouched, with abandoned suburban homes that look as if people could still live there. But this is but an illusion, as Staten Island has practically no living life. Crawling with Walkers and cut off from the rest of the world, even the bravest of stragglers, gangs, and hegemons rarely dare to wander through its eerie and empty streets.

Across the Hudson from Manhattan, New Jersey plays home to the nearest Human Fortress in the region. Built to keep all the dangers of the outside world out, the scientists and researchers from within work feverishly towards a cure for the devastating Walker Virus. Most of the people inside the fortress do not leave, and while some stragglers dot the landscape adjacent to the fortress, the two rarely interact. In fact, the stragglers probably hope they don't interact... For them, the human survivors are often more dangerous and hostile than the Walkers themselves.
