HFPA - Nominations and Winners Pretty routine day. It's still good to see how the Globes set the tone for the awards season. It's a decent indicator for how the Oscars are going to swing. Personally, I was pleasantly surprised that Slumdog Millionaire got the best drama. I was almost certain they would give it to Benjamin Button. Personally, I think Slumdog, Frost/Nixon, and Revolutionary Road were all better movies than Button, but I guess that's just me.
I'm also very surprised that Mickey Rourke won best actor over Frank Langella and Sean Penn. I could have sworn that those two had all the buzz going into it, but Mickey was fantastic in The Wrestler, and that may have been the most entertaining of all the movies that featured nominated actors. Kate Winslett was pretty expected, I thought either her or Meryl would get it. I'd say this makes Kate the Oscar favorite. She's been nominated 5 times and it may finally be a 'career' recognition award.
No other huge surprises, other than Hugh Laurie getting robbed again (the man never gets his due), but that's become routine enough where it's no longer a surprise. It seems he goes in as a betting favorite each year, for the Globes and the Emmy's, and he comes up shorthanded almost every time.
Edit: I'd say Anna Paquin winning best actress for a TV drama for True Blood is a pretty big upset. I'm a fan of the series, but I think the genre of the series and nature of the role would keep her out of any serious consideration. I also think she was a longshot in the Vegas line, but I'm not sure about that one. Either way, it was a pleasant surprise to see her grab it.
