Canon Characters
Veritas Falsus's canon policy is
selectively canon only. What does this mean? This means that for certain positions and ranks, we have decided to help flesh out the realm by making canons for all of them. Meanwhile, we will still allow members to fill in the blanks around them, thus we are still accepting original characters. Basically, this policy means that certain groups and certain positions are, by design, occupied by a canon. This has three main functions:
- The first is realm immersion. It helps players to know who's in charge of what. If the player creates a hegemon grunt, or an everyday straggler, it's useful for them to know the names and basic information regarding their leader or their most notorious peers. This information can help them brainstorm, and even if it doesn't actively do anything, it adds flavor and makes the realm more dynamic and "real." Characters who lived in the same general area for years should know about each other; this gives them the chance.
- The second main reason that we have canons in these positions is continuity and reference. Having canons allows players to structure their characters around these canons. They are not meant to be comprehensive, and you're encouraged to add additional characters around them. That said, these canons should give a rough idea of what we expect from characters, and it can help you benchmark where your character should go. For example, elite hegemon officials are—by design—the strongest of the bunch, so if you're making a random straggler that's just as strong or much stronger than the hegemon leaders, that would represent a potential plot hole or continuity error.
- The third and final function is to help out the player. Veritas Falsus's world is very complex, and for the most part, it's actually quite fractured. Hegemon characters will have limited opportunity to interact with stragglers, fortress dwellers would have difficulty interacting with gang members, and so on. Even the average straggler tends to keep to their group. Ordinarily, some players may find it hard to interact with each other in a way that maintains the realism and immersion of the realm itself. These canon lists give characters potential relationships, subplots, and thread partners for interaction. The list attempts to bring together characters.
So which groups are open for original characters? By and large, the following groups will
always be open for original characters:
- Average stragglers
- Vectorville citizens
- Ordinary gang members
- Hegemon grunts
These groups will occasionally be open for original characters, though your app must impress us:
- Well known stragglers (e.g. famous, well regarded, or extremely powerful stragglers)
- Vectorville scout parties and task forces
- Gang officials with rank (capable of commanding other gang members)
For the most part, unless there are special extenuating circumstances, these groups are
already filled by canons, and are
not open for original characters:
- Vectorville Leadership
- Hegemon officers and head families
- Gang Leaders
Most of these members are well known, notorious members of the world, and many people should know them. We can't afford to play revolving door with them, and it's important that—even if no one has applied for them yet—members know who they are and what they stand for.
