Introduction to Veritas Falsus
Background and Credits
Welcome to Veritas Falsus. At this point, you may have some questions about Veritas Falsus. First off, what is "Veritas Falsus"? Veritas means truth in Latin; Falsus means false or deceptive. Quite simply, it is a Latin phrase for Deceptive (Falsus) Truth (Veritas). As for the origins of the RPG itself, it is fairly complex. The rough framework and design comes from Rena's brain, but the actual realm background information comes from a number of contributers and staff members. Please commend the team for their hard work.
To begin, Veritas Falsus is an online roleplaying community, centered around a future dystopia. Our world is a post-apocalyptic one, containing some elements of cyberpunk, though we don't neatly fit into any one genre. As an RPG, we have several (some overt, some more subtle) supernatural elements. The manner of which we conduct our roleplay is through this forum, on a play-by-post basis. This mean we construct fictional characters and have them interact with each other and/or with a storyteller (in "choose your own adventure style") via individual posts on this forum.
Obviously, the actual design is not a hundred percent original (almost nothing is, really, intertextuality and all that jazz), so credit has to be handed out to similar works. Thematically, Veritas Falsus borrows from comics and comic-derived media (such as Marvel, DC, and the Heroes franchise), zombie books and media (such as Romero or I am Legend [vampires in this case]), post-apocalyptic futures (such as the Fallout, Terminator, Gears of War, or Resident Evil series's), and epic poetry (such as the Iliad, Gilgamesh, and similar mythos). We have attempted to integrate them together into one fluid world. The timeline and historical context is still Earth. Veritas Falsus does not attempt to rewrite history (at least up until the beginning of our timeline) so much as add to it.
Another fairly uncommon feature on Veritas Falsus is the storyteller-led roleplay. While storyteller-led threads are somewhat rare, Veritas Falsus cannot take credit for it either, as it was originally inspired off various other storyteller/gamemaster-led threads and roleplaying concepts such as Dungeons and Dragons. We have simply adopted it and adapted it to suit our world mechanics.
Joining
Should you have made it this far through the thread, you may be interested in joining our RPG. If you would like to join, make sure that you have the
Rules before creating your character account. You will be held accountable the moment that you complete your registration, so please ensure that you have the read rules to avoid any easily avoidable mishaps.
The other necessary read is our
Plot. Obviously, you should be interested in the plot
before you chose to join us (otherwise, why would you be here?). Please take the time to read through the whole thing. It is a bit long, we agree, but the preliminary background and information about the current situation is all there. Remember that our roleplay takes place in the New York Metropolitan area (or at least, the former New York Metropolitan area), so please ensure that your character is consistent and has a reason to be there.
Please remember that we require all members to have at least one
canon character. The reason being is that Veritas Falsus's world is very complex and highly involved, and we need a lot of parties to fill in the niches. Naturally, if you are required to have a canon character at all times, this means that your first character has to be a canon character. Please keep this in mind when you are joining. You are free to make original characters after you have an approved and active canon.
Remember to register with a proper email. You will not be able to verify it if you provide a false email, and we require email verification for our members. Should you have any difficulty registering, or are unable to verify your user account, please feel free to contact the administration via the
Contact Us link at the bottom of every page.
Applying
Once you register, you need an
application before you can play. We require administrative approval on all applications before they are eligible for play within the Veritas Falsus realm. The VF staff feel that, in order to balance the game and to ensure that players and characters are up consistent with our world, we must have players approve their application. We may be a little strict with these applications, so we apologize in advance for any distress we cause. :D
All Veritas Falsus applications must conform to
this template. Due to technical and administrative process, we ask that everyone uses the same template. It makes it easier for the staff and members to get the same level of necessary information from the characters, and allows the administrators to go over the applications quicker and more efficiently. Feel free to decorate the application how you want, but this is not necessary.
When creating your character, make sure you demonstrate a decent understanding of our
background information. The staff has worked hard to create, index, and present the background information in a concise fashion. If you are creating a character, you will be expected to know the background information relative to the type of lifestyle that the character is living. If they have powers, please consult the
Powers Guide for the background information on how powers are done on Veritas Falsus.
When creating a character, we ask for reasonable designs. Your teenage character will not know a dozen abilities and run around bulldozing hegemon elites with their superpower of doom +99. We despise Mary Sues and munchkins, and we like to cause players who create these characters as much pain as possible.
Important things to consider is how they make a living for themselves, how do they manage to survive, how they interact with the people around them, and how these factors throughout his or her lifetime has affected the individual they are today. We, at Veritas Falsus, specifically put a good level of emphasis on
process, because we believe that people are shaped by their experiences, and ultimately the person's individuality is the sum total of both their natural proclivities and all of their experiences.
Once you complete an application and received approval from the staff, you are officially a member of Veritas Falsus. Feel free to
introduce yourself and get to know your peers!
Roleplaying
We have certain forums specifically for roleplaying. Namely, these are the forums within the categories
The Plot Thickens... and
The Bildungsroman. All posts in these sections are to be fully
in-character, meaning from the perspective of your character. Any out of character discussion should occur in brackets [[]] or parenthesis (()) or ooc tags [ooc][/ooc] and should be kept to a bare minimum.
As our rules state, we do not have require a minimum number of words per post, but we do have standards of vividity and detail, and this can be much harder to meet. If your post is long, it does not mean that it offered a lot of vividness and detail. We prefer quality and concision (of the writing) over overwrought and overlong posts. Thus, we are not assigning any minimal length requirements, but we do expect people to take the space they need to construct a
good post. If your post is simply lacking in effort or detail, we will tell you to fix it. And we expect you to go back and fix these posts.
We also do not like to mark our target audience as "advanced roleplayers" or whatever the trendy term is now. We prefer that players are simply quality writers over "advanced roleplayers" (whatever that even means). However, know that Veritas Falsus puts a premium on quality, so we expect our members to do the same.
