Default Canons: Frequently Asked Questions

Canons: Frequently Asked Questions

Is it required that we play a canon?

Not necessarily, though we highly encourage it. Veritas Falsus's world is very intricate and involved, and we have storyteller-led threads that will reference various characters in our world. The goal here is to tell a good collective story, and that requires everyone to do their part. Members are still allowed—and even encouraged—to freelance or sandbox, but the point of the game is to work together to create an immersive gameplay.

You are free to play original characters, provided that the group you are applying for (e.g. stragglers) is open for original characters. Some groups, however, are unlikely to ever be open for original characters, and members are expected to take on canon characters if they want to fill them out. They are, of course, still encouraged to take on more canon characters if they desire.

Why should we play a canon?

Because Veritas Falsus is run a little differently than most places. Character actions influence one another on a wide scale (as they should when various groups are competing for scarce resources and power), and because of the presence of storytellers, VF may introduce a number of board-wide developments. A famine, for example, could arise at any time and affect everyone from the highest hegemon official to the lowest straggler.

Furthermore, VF will end up using these storytellers to reference the events of other characters. A straggler who is wandering in Downtown Manhattan may be at risk from attack by a Golden Banner lieutenant. Some lieutenants may be more liable to do the deed than others, and the storyteller can add to the immersion and realism by mentioning it.

In short, we won't pull any punches with our gameplay, which is precisely why we need developed characters ready to use or reference as NPCs. After your character is approved, it may have special plot significance and we may ask you to become a plotter.

What if we can't find a canon we would like to play?

Please talk to an administrator. Or, you can ask around in the Questions forum and see if the board members can't help you out.

What if we don't like the character's playby?

The playbys are all negotiable. The staff put a lot of effort in creating unique and original characters with their own playbys, but if you feel like you can one-up us, you're certainly welcome to do it. Sometimes we would miss out on a playby that we overlooked.

However, the stipulation is that if the playby changes the character design too much, we may have to ask that you switch to something else.

Is there a limit to the number of canons?

Not really. There is no implicit limit to the number of canons or the number of characters that each player can have. The only stipulation is that you must keep them all active.

Our barometer for activity is that you should be able to post as that character in a reasonable amount of time. If you are actively poking around the site and posting for other characters while it takes you several weeks to respond to a post for one particular character, we'll assume that you are having trouble keeping up with all of your characters, and we may ask you downsize.

No one should have to wait for weeks on end for you to post as one particular character, especially if you are around the site and posting for other characters. If this should be the case, then we may reassign the canon character in question.

What's with the asterisk system?

The asterisk system is basically just quality control. Characters with asterisks are either plot significant, potentially realm-changing in power or dynamic, or integral towards the function of various organizations (that affect many characters). As such, you have to understand that we cannot simply have anyone coming in, swooping them up, and playing them poorly.

The asterisk system is not meant to deter anyone from playing these characters. We would love it if you were to give it a shot. However, we wish that you play them well and keep them active, because they are important to our plot.
