Street Gangs
The street gangs are very similar to the stragglers. They squeak out a meager existence amidst the rubble of a once-proud city. If they are old enough to remember it, they too are sentimental about the old way of life, and would like nothing more than to return to it. Nevertheless, the street gangs do vary from the average straggler in a number of ways, and the biggest is their organization, as well as their support.
Unlike the stragglers, who the hegemons do not want to organize into large groups, the hegemons fully endorse the street gangs assembling and fraternizing. In fact, the hegemons frequently puppet these street gangs to do their bidding, keeping the streets how they want it. In return, street gangs are offered a more reliable meal ticket, as well as the opportunity to gather in larger groups and socialize in relative normalcy. However, most of the normal population of stragglers find these gangbangers to be little more than thugs, who exert their power over the weak through terror.
Even with the support of the Hegemons, the life of a Street Gang member is not an easy one. Despite the help of their peers, they still need to scavenge for food and shelter, and often find themselves camped under old underpasses or in rubble-reduced buildings, or wherever they can find a safe and dry place. Because of their larger groups, however, they don't have as much to worry about in the way of walkers or attackers, though walkers still make attempts to assault their position with superior numbers.
