Name: Fei Yen Xiulan.

Fei Yen shortens her name to just Fei for the ease of it. Her full first name is Fei Yen, Yen not being a middle name.

Fei's first name, pronounced Fay Yen, means Flying Swallow Bird. It was a tradition in Fei's family, going back generations, to name the female children in the family after birds or having names that had something to do with birds. Fei's mother's name was Peng, meaning Mythical Bird. Her grandmother's name was Xiao-niao, meaning small bird. This tradition was very important to her mother and though Fei was born and raised in the United States she was still given a traditional Chinese name.

Fei's last name, Xiulan, means elegant orchid, and is pronounced Sheeyoo-lan. Many people look at her last name and get boggled. Usually they avoid saying it at any cost, though it's quite easy to say once they're told how it is said.

Having been about ten when the fallout happened, Fei has an elementary understanding of reading and writing English. Though she enjoys both, she still has to sound out some words that she's not familiar with. Fei has a love for reading and writing, and often finds it more of a game than a task. She's curious about education and knowing more, though is not formally educated. Fei naturally has an eloquence about her that makes many believe she is more refined than she actually is. however, her understanding of large and more difficult vocabulary is substandard, she tries her best to learn new words when possible.

Feiyen's understanding of Chinese is even more rudimentary that her understanding of English. She can speak it just fine due to growing up with a grandmother who spoke no English at all. However her ability to read characters and write is almost non-existent. Fei can usually recognize some words like water and mother, but she can't piece together sentences or understand Chinese grammar.

Sexual Orientation: Fei is much more attracted to men than women. She would rather sleep with a man and prefers their attention than the attention from a woman. However, being a prostitute in the world she lives in, sometimes she has no choice but to please women. Xiulan is her surname?

Most Chinese surnames are one character (rare and usually only ethnic surnames are two characters); Xiulan is two. How would this fit in? What characters are they? Is it a real surname?

I am quite certain that Xiulan is not a surname. Chinese names do come in 3 characters and Xiulan (had it been used as a forename) would be from Xiu Lan. But correct me if I am wrong.

Edit: After asking Ren, she said that it is possible but extremely rare, something about something dynasty connection. And I think I just sounded very ignorant there. Teehee.

If you guys want me to change her last name, I really don't care. I'm not 100% set on using the surname, except that I wanted one that started with an X. In all truthfulness, I don't have any clue how Chinese do their surnames. I did more research on Chinese Zodiacs than I did with last names.

On that note; I accidentally misspelled Xiulan in the title. It's not Ziulan, it's Xiulan.

Edit: Also, I've PMed Riss to ask her how she intended to do Concubines and Prostitutes. So I started Fei just to get something to work with. I'm waiting on Riss' reply to really start on the knitty gritty that is Fei.
